Arrow McLaren Shines in St. Pete Warmup, O’Ward Leads

Although Arrow McLaren faced a challenging qualifying round on Saturday at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, the team’s morning warmup session suggested strong potential for today’s race. Pato O’Ward led the charge by clocking the fastest lap among Arrow McLaren drivers, signaling optimism for the team’s performance in the upcoming race.

Strong Warmup Lap Times from Arrow McLaren Drivers

In the final practice session, O’Ward delivered a top lap time of 1 minute, 1.5944 seconds in the No. 5 Chevrolet, placing him among the top six fastest drivers. Christian Lundgaard followed closely, securing third place with a lap of 1:01.7964 in the No. 7 Chevrolet, while Nolan Siegel ended the session sixth at 1:02.0818 driving the No. 6 Chevrolet. These results indicate that Arrow McLaren’s lineup is competitive despite a less favorable qualifying.

Disappointing Qualifying Results Contrast Warmup Success

During Saturday’s NTT P1 Award qualifying session, none of the Arrow McLaren drivers advanced into the Firestone Fast Six. O’Ward qualified eighth, Lundgaard took 12th place, and Siegel settled in 22nd out of the 25 entrants. This gap between qualifying and practice performance has added tension ahead of the race, as the team looks to translate morning speed into race success.

O’Ward Comments on Track Conditions and Car Performance

It’s a bit cold right now,

O’Ward remarked.

There was quite a bit of front (tire) graining because of the cold temperatures. I wouldn’t expect to see it as bad in the race. It’s going to heat up. The car balance will shift a bit. I think we’re sporty.

Race Preview and Competition Context

The 100-lap race is scheduled to begin at noon Eastern Time and will be broadcast live on FOX, FOX One, FOX Deportes, the FOX Sports app, and INDYCAR Radio. In the warmup session, O’Ward’s lap time was sandwiched by some of the series’ most experienced drivers. Reigning St. Pete winner and four-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Alex Palou secured second place in the session at 1:01.5962 driving the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.

Scott Dixon, a six-time series champion, contributed to Chip Ganassi Racing’s strong practice showing by posting the fourth fastest lap (1:01.8307) in the No. 9 PNC Bank Honda. Kyle Kirkwood, the Florida native behind the No. 27 JM Bullion/Gold.com Honda fielded by Andretti Global, completed the top five with a lap of 1:02.0062.

Additional Session Highlights and Rookie Performance

The session saw some unexpected turns as NTT P1 Award winner Scott McLaughlin recorded the slowest lap time at 1:03.5492 driving the No. 3 DEX Team Penske Chevrolet. Meanwhile, Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time F1 World Champion Michael Schumacher and a Formula One veteran himself, emerged as the fastest rookie, placing 12th with a time of 1:02.5027 in the No. 47 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Honda during the 30-minute practice.

Implications for Today’s Firestone Grand Prix

Arrow McLaren’s strong performance in the warmup session provides a hopeful outlook despite mixed results in qualifying. How well O’Ward, Lundgaard, and Siegel adapt to changing track temperatures and conditions during the race will be critical for their success. The team’s ability to improve car balance and tire management could determine their placement in the fiercely competitive St. Pete field, with top contenders like Alex Palou, Scott Dixon, and Kyle Kirkwood closely matched.
