The Dallas Mavericks will host the Boston Celtics on Tuesday, hoping Cooper Flagg’s recent scoring surge can finally lead to a team victory. Flagg, who set a record with 49 points as a teenager in an NBA game last Thursday, followed up with 34 points in a close 111-107 loss to the Houston Rockets on Saturday.
Despite Flagg’s individual brilliance, Dallas remains mired in a four-game losing streak. The rookie returned after missing two games due to a rolled left ankle, demonstrating his resilience by scoring 21 points in the second half against Houston but missing key shots late that could have tied the game.
Cooper Flagg Emerges as Key Offensive Weapon
Dallas coach Jason Kidd praised Flagg’s competitive spirit, saying,
“He’s built to win. He’s going to try to do everything to help his team win. He’s done that all season.”
Flagg’s teammates also expressed confidence in him, with center Daniel Gafford stating,
“Coops? Oh, amazing. Put the ball in his hand and good things happen throughout the stretch of the game. We trust him to take those shots at the end of the game that he took. And the majority of the time, those shots fall.”
Gafford also empathized with Flagg’s missed shot at the end, adding,
“I’m pretty sure it was tough that he didn’t see that last one go in. He just came off a 49-point game. The sky’s the limit for him, so let him just get the ball and go.”
Injuries Compound Struggles for the Mavericks
Dallas faced additional setbacks as guard Brandon Williams and forward P.J. Washington both left Saturday’s game early due to injuries. Williams exited in the second quarter with a lower right leg contusion after a collision with Rockets guard Reed Sheppard, and Washington left late in regulation with a head contusion caused by an accidental elbow from teammate Naji Marshall.

Washington has entered concussion protocol and will miss Tuesday’s game, while Williams remains questionable. With star Anthony Davis sidelined indefinitely due to a finger injury, the Mavericks are in a tough spot heading into their matchup against a well-rested Celtics squad fresh off a dominant 107-79 win against the Milwaukee Bucks.
Boston Celtics Showcase Defensive Strength Led by Jaylen Brown
The Celtics recovered from an early 12-point deficit against Milwaukee to control the game, particularly on defense, limiting the Bucks to under 20 points in each of the final three quarters. Jaylen Brown spearheaded Boston’s effort with 30 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. Brown, currently the NBA’s fourth-leading scorer with an average of 29.4 points per game, has been a consistent force on the boards, raising his season average to a career-best 6.9 rebounds per game.
Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla acknowledged Brown’s all-around leadership, saying,
“We always talk about (how) there’s a bunch of different ways you can lead — there’s 1,000 ways. One of them is what you saw (Sunday) — he had nine rebounds in the first half alone … It’s just another way that he leads. His understanding (of) what gives us the best chances to win every night, and also helping set the tone for the standards we have to have on both ends of the floor.”
Previous Meetings Suggest a Competitive Encounter
Last season, the Mavericks and Celtics split their two matchups, with the visiting team winning both times. As Boston enters Texas after a commanding victory, and Dallas seeks to halt its losing streak despite multiple injuries, Tuesday’s game promises to be a compelling contest featuring Jaylen Brown’s Celtics dominance and Cooper Flagg’s rising star power.
