Rudy Gobert Threatens NBA With Suspension Appeal

Rudy Gobert is currently facing a one-game suspension from the NBA following a flagrant foul committed during the February 20 game against the Dallas Mavericks. As the league leader in flagrant fouls, this latest incident led to his temporary removal from play, but Gobert and the Minnesota Timberwolves plan to challenge the decision through an appeal. The veteran center believes the foul was wrongly judged as unnecessary flailing and insists the suspension may be overturned.

Gobert Challenges NBA Officials Over Consistency

After the game, Gobert expressed frustration with the NBA’s officiating, suggesting the referees made an inaccurate call against him. He raised concerns about inconsistency in how flagrant fouls are assessed, noting that he often bears the brunt of tough calls.

“We’re going to appeal it, and hopefully they look at it, and they see that it was just an accident,”

Gobert said.

“We will see.”

He further criticized the disparity in foul calls when he is on the receiving end, pointing out the physical toll these calls take on him as a 7-foot player.

“I get hit in the head almost every game, and I never get flagrants,”

Gobert stated.

“But when, sometimes, inadvertently, I hit somebody in the head, they never miss. They’re always very hard on me on that, especially when it’s not intentional. … Just because I’m 7 foot doesn’t mean that it doesn’t hurt when I get hit in the head. I’m close to a superhuman, but I am not.”

Impact on Timberwolves’ Playoff Position and Upcoming Schedule

Gobert delivered a strong performance in the game against Dallas, contributing 22 points and 17 rebounds across 32 minutes, helping the Timberwolves secure a 122-111 victory. This win moved Minnesota’s record to 35-22, momentarily placing them fifth in the Western Conference before a Los Angeles Lakers win pushed them back to sixth due to having more losses.

The Timberwolves are currently in good form, having won three straight games and seven of their last ten. On February 22, they are scheduled to host the Philadelphia 76ers, a game that could prove challenging if Gobert’s suspension remains in effect.

The absence of Gobert would be especially problematic if the 76ers’ star center, Joel Embiid, returns to action after a knee injury. Embiid’s status is day-to-day, but his presence would intensify the battle inside the paint against Minnesota’s defense, which relies heavily on Gobert’s All-NBA defensive skills.

What Lies Ahead for Gobert and the Timberwolves

The Timberwolves await the NBA’s final ruling on Gobert’s suspension appeal, which will determine whether he misses the upcoming game against the Philadelphia 76ers. Should the suspension be upheld, Gobert is expected to return on February 24 in a matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers. The outcome of this decision will likely have a significant impact on Minnesota’s playoff trajectory, especially given their tight contest in the competitive Western Conference.
