Joel Embiid will be sidelined for his fifth consecutive game as the Philadelphia 76ers face the Minnesota Timberwolves this Sunday at 2 p.m. The team’s latest injury report lists Embiid, their star center, as unavailable due to ongoing management of his right knee and soreness in his right shin, a problem that has persisted for over a week.
After missing games leading up to the All-Star break, initially for right knee injury management, Embiid’s situation became more complicated when shin soreness developed, causing the team to withhold him from play. This shin issue first emerged publicly in an update on February 18th, before the Sixers’ game against the Atlanta Hawks.
While participating in a right knee injury management program during the All-Star break, Joel Embiid repeated soreness in his right shin. Following a consultation with doctors, Embiid has received daily treatment while progressing through on-court work and strength and conditioning. He will be out of tomorrow night’s game vs. Atlanta and reevaluated ahead of the team’s back to back this weekend.

Coaching Staff Provides Insights on Embiid’s Condition and Potential Return
Before the Hawks game, Sixers head coach Nick Nurse fielded several questions about Embiid’s health status and availability. Nurse expressed optimism about a short absence but acknowledged that medical staff determined Embiid should not play immediately.
REPORTER: Do you expect he’s going to miss extended time?
NURSE: The doctors don’t want to play him tonight, the plan is to get him on the court [Friday], see how he looks tomorrow, and I think we just go from there. I don’t anticipate it being a long time; I’m pretty optimistic about it. But we’ll see what they come up with and see where it ends up tomorrow.
REPORTER: If today were a playoff game, what do you think the likelihood is he would play?
NURSE: I can’t overspeak with what the doctors would say, but I would tend to think he would play. But I can’t overspeak what they’re saying. I actually have I’m preparing this game and players and all this stuff that’s going on, doctors do their thing, they tell Simon, Simon tells me and I know who’s available and we go from there. Tomorrow, off day or whatever, he comes in and works out and we go through it again, might be a little bit more involved, I would probably say he would play if it was a playoff game today but I can’t speak for Joel or the doctors.
REPORTER: Is your understanding that Joel’s knee got better enough that he would have played if not for the shin soreness?
NURSE: I think so, yeah. Not 100 percent sure on that, but I think so.
Embiid’s Injury Timeline and Impact on Team Performance
Embiid’s health challenges reflect a significant shift from his previous approach to playing through injuries, which he acknowledged this past summer in an ESPN feature. After an encouraging stretch of games in January, expectations were raised regarding his ability to lead the Sixers into the latter part of the season. However, these recent setbacks have diminished public confidence in his durability.

In Embiid’s absence, the Sixers have had difficulty maintaining competitiveness, suffering several blowout losses, including a demoralizing defeat to the 16-42 New Orleans Pelicans. Beyond a competitive showing in a loss to the Hawks, the team has frequently faltered during the second halves of recent games, moving away from the energetic, fourth-quarter comebacks that previously defined their style.
Veterans Acknowledge Team Struggles Amid Ongoing Losing Streak
Veteran players have openly addressed the team’s current struggles. Kelly Oubre referenced an unwarranted sense of confidence despite consecutive losses, highlighting challenges in competing consistently across games.
I think we’re a little too entitled right now,
Kelly Oubre said to the Inquirer on Saturday.
Teams aren’t going to roll over and let us win any of those games.
Trade Deadline Decisions and Team Dynamics Under Scrutiny
Questions loom around the Sixers’ limited activity at the NBA trade deadline. The team parted ways with Jared McCain yet failed to acquire a significant impact player. McCain, though rarely a major factor during his brief tenure, was notably missed by teammates such as Tyrese Maxey, who viewed him as a professional mentee. Since leaving Philadelphia, McCain has found a more substantive role with the Oklahoma City Thunder, contributing amid injuries to their core starters.
Adding to the roster challenges, Paul George is suspended until late March following a violation of the league’s drug policy, further depleting the Sixers’ lineup. Meanwhile, Vinícius Júnior Edgecombe has struggled with a prolonged shooting slump, and Tyrese Maxey’s efforts to recover form after the All-Star break have not improved his three-point shooting, which remains poor through February.
Johni Broome’s Meniscus Tear Adds to Sixers’ Frontcourt Woes
Compounding the team’s difficulties, rookie big man Johni Broome suffered a meniscus tear on Saturday during the third quarter of a Blue Coats G-League game, leading to an indefinite absence. The team announced Broome’s injury alongside the 2 p.m. injury report, stating that recovery and potential return timelines are yet to be determined following medical assessment.
Broome has been a standout performer in the G-League this season, highlighted by a 50-point game and averages of 19.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per contest. Despite this success, he has only seen limited minutes with the Sixers, playing 11 NBA games totaling 55 minutes, without an NBA field goal since November 25th during the team’s loss to the Orlando Magic.
Meniscus injuries are notoriously challenging for players of Broome’s size and style, as rehabilitation requires restoring lower-body strength, mobility, and explosiveness. This development presents a significant test for the rookie as he aims to establish himself at the NBA level.
Outlook: Sixers Seek Stability Amid Injury Challenges and Performance Concerns
The Philadelphia 76ers are currently navigating a difficult stretch marked by significant player absences and disappointing performances. With Joel Embiid sidelined and Johni Broome injured, the team faces serious challenges in maintaining competitiveness in the Eastern Conference. Paul George’s suspension and slumping shooters add to the depth of their struggles.
As the season progresses, the team’s primary focus will be on recovering Embiid’s health and integrating returning players effectively to restore balance. While the ongoing setbacks have tested the Sixers’ resilience, a successful return by their stars could shift momentum heading into the final months of the campaign. For now, the club and its supporters hope for positive developments and an end to the run of losses that have overshadowed recent games.
