Austin Reaves Voices Frustration as Lakers Slip Again

Following the Los Angeles Lakers’ 113-110 loss to the Phoenix Suns on the road Thursday, guard Austin Reaves openly conveyed his disappointment. When pressed about his frustration, Reaves described it as very high, reflecting the team’s ongoing struggles this season.

Lakers Grapple with Consecutive Losses and Slumping Form

The Lakers have lost three straight games and five of their last seven, managing only a 1-3 record since the All-Star break. Despite the downturn, superstar guard Luka Dončić aimed to keep spirits up, stating,

“Just go game-by-game, try to win every game. Obviously we didn’t start good [out of the All-Star break], but nothing is over. We just got to keep bringing the mindset of trying to win every game.”

The Lakers lineup includes All-Stars Dončić and LeBron James, alongside Reaves, who has occasionally demonstrated All-Star level performance himself. Still, they have yet to establish themselves as strong contenders in the Western Conference this season.

Current Standings Highlight Increasing Playoff Pressure

At 34-24, Los Angeles sits sixth in the Western Conference, narrowly holding a one-game lead over the seventh-place Phoenix Suns. This slim margin keeps the Lakers at constant risk of slipping into the play-in tournament zone, underlining the urgency for improved results as regular season play continues.

Defensive Weaknesses and Roster Concerns Persist

ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst underscored key problems facing the Lakers during a recent Get Up appearance, calling the team “a flawed team” and “a very poor defensive team.” These defensive struggles have long been a challenge, yet offseason moves to strengthen the squad were limited due to salary cap constraints.

Los Angeles focused on enhancing their interior presence by signing center Deandre Ayton, who currently averages 13 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. However, Ayton has not consistently impacted play on both ends, contributing to the Lakers’ ranking near the bottom in scoring defense (18th) and field goal percentage allowed (26th).

Playoff Outlook and the Road Ahead for the Lakers

Though the Lakers maintain the foundation of a potential playoff team, their path is increasingly precarious. Should they qualify through the play-in, facing top Western Conference teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets, Denver Nuggets, or Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round will pose formidable challenges.

The team’s trajectory raises questions about the future of key figures such as LeBron James, Austin Reaves, and head coach JJ Redick if they fail to advance past the first round for a third consecutive year.
