Steelers GM Backs Roman Wilson’s Big Comeback Season

Roman Wilson, wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, has yet to meet expectations in his first two NFL seasons. Playing 13 games during the 2025 season, Wilson managed 12 receptions for 166 yards and two touchdowns, while his rookie year was limited by injuries, restricting him to just a single game. Despite these obstacles, the Steelers remain hopeful about his potential.

Steadfast Confidence from Steelers Management

At the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Steelers General Manager Omar Khan reaffirmed his belief in Wilson’s talent and future contribution to the team. Khan pointed out that injury setbacks during Wilson’s rookie year and limited opportunities last season have slowed his progress, but expressed optimism for what lies ahead.

That’s a good question. You guys have heard me talk about my beief in Roman,

Khan said.

I think Roman’s a talented player and I expect him to contribute. I know the coaching staff is excited to work with him, and his rookie year he got hurt, and that was a little bit of a setback and last year the opportunities didn’t com, I think, like everybody would like. But I think he’s got a good future.

Competition and Limited Playing Time

Wilson was frequently a healthy scratch late last season, as veteran receivers Adam Thielen and Marquez Valdes-Scantling were preferred by quarterback Aaron Rodgers. This lack of consistent playing time has contributed to Wilson’s slow start in the league.

The first year obviously was the injuries. First year he got hurt, and I think at the end we were getting ready to start the window for him to practice and we got eliminated from the playoffs. And then last year, different situations, there were different things and there’s not one specific thing, but I’m confident you guys going to see some good things from him this year,

Khan further explained.

Support from Teammates Highlights Work Ethic

While some fans have already labeled Wilson a bust, Steelers long snapper Christian Kuntz praised his strong work ethic and dedication to improvement. Kuntz stressed that Wilson’s commitment off the field signals promising development despite limited early production.

There are guys that aren’t producing that are developing on the team that no one’s heard of,

Kuntz said on his podcast.

One comes to mind now: Roman Wilson. People think the production wasn’t there the first two years — they’re calling him a bust. They don’t know that he’s working his ass off. I will — and I’ve continued to — back Roman because I see how he works, and I know it’s going to pay off. I believe in him.

Outlook Under New Coaching Leadership

With Mike McCarthy now leading the Steelers as head coach, Wilson’s third season presents a crucial opportunity for him to demonstrate significant improvement. The team and its fans will be closely watching to see if Wilson can convert his potential into consistent performance on the field.
