Khalil Mack Strikes 1-Year $18M Deal to Stay with Chargers

Nine-time Pro Bowl linebacker Khalil Mack has finalized a one-year, fully guaranteed contract worth $18 million to remain with the Los Angeles Chargers, according to sources reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler. This new deal secures Mack’s presence on a Chargers defense considered among the league’s best as the 2026 season approaches.

Injury Challenges and Defensive Impact in 2025 Season

Mack, who earned the 2016 Defensive Player of the Year award, recorded 5.5 sacks in 2025, a career low partially due to an elbow injury that caused him to miss four games. Despite limited action, his influence on the defense was clear. During the four games without Mack, Los Angeles allowed 579 rushing yards, ranking sixth-worst in the NFL. After his return in Week 7, the Chargers’ run defense tightened considerably, conceding the fourth-fewest rushing yards until Week 18 when many starters were rested.

Team Retention Efforts and Free Agency Outlook

With Mack and defensive tackle Teair Tart already re-signed, the Chargers retain two key contributors on defense. Their attention now shifts to securing outside linebacker Odafe Oweh and left guard Zion Johnson, both of whom remain free agents and important pieces for improving the team’s overall strength.

Mack’s Ongoing Pursuit of Playoff Success

Despite his personal and professional accolades, Mack has yet to achieve a playoff victory. His record now stands at 0-6 in postseason games following the Los Angeles Chargers’ recent wild-card loss to the New England Patriots. Speaking after the season, Mack shared his ultimate goal:

“I want to ultimately be a champion,”

Mack stated during his end-of-season press conference.

Career Background and Legacy

Khalil Mack, drafted fifth overall in 2014 by the Oakland Raiders, began his NFL career with four seasons in Oakland before being traded to the Chicago Bears in 2018. He joined the Chargers in 2022 and has since remained a leader on defense. Accumulating 113 career sacks, Mack ranks seventh among active NFL players, further cementing his status as an elite outside linebacker.
