The Green Bay Packers completed a trade just before the NFL free agency legal tampering window to bring in former All-Pro linebacker Zaire Franklin from the Indianapolis Colts. Franklin is expected to assume a leadership role alongside Micah Parsons, stepping in to fill the void left by Quay Walker, who signed with the Las Vegas Raiders during free agency.
Although Franklin, 29, struggled last season adapting to the Colts’ new defensive scheme under coordinator Lou Anarumo, he had previously been regarded among the NFL’s top linebackers. Over 17 games in 2025, Franklin recorded 125 tackles, accumulated two sacks, forced a fumble, and defended five passes.
Franklin Shares His Perspective on Playing with Micah Parsons
In an appearance on the Jim Rome Show, Franklin expressed that having a player like Parsons on the defense would improve performance for everyone.
“Absolutely, a pass rusher like Micah Parsons is gonna make everybody’s life a little bit better out there in Wisconsin,”
Franklin said.
He also acknowledged the challenge of establishing himself with the Packers, emphasizing the effort required to earn respect.
“We’ve all gotta earn our keep based off what we do,”
Franklin stated.
“I’m just looking forward to earning their trust, and just being a great teammate.”
Regarding the transition to Green Bay, Franklin remarked on the shift in his identity moving to a new team.
“It’s definitely a changing of my identity to an extent,”
he commented. His determination to bring a high level of intensity and playmaking to the Packers aligns with the hopes of the fanbase for this trade to pay dividends.
Green Bay’s Defensive Challenges Persist Despite Moves
The Packers defense is undergoing significant changes this offseason. Key players like Rashan Gary, Nate Hobbs, Colby Wooden, and Quay Walker have departed, and more roster adjustments are possible. Although the club signed cornerback Benjamin St-Juste to strengthen the secondary, last year’s defensive struggles indicate more work is needed.
Micah Parsons’ health will be critical to the Packers’ defensive prospects. Parsons tore his ACL late last season and is unlikely to play in Week 1, with a targeted return between Weeks 3 and 4 if recovery goes well. His presence is anticipated to be a major factor in improving the defense’s effectiveness.
General Manager Brian Gutekunst faces pressure to make additional moves to shore up the defense. Without a first-round draft pick in 2026, relying solely on the draft may leave the Packers vulnerable to another difficult season on the defensive side.
