Matthew Tkachuk is firmly committed to representing Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, following the NHL players’ absence from the 2022 games due to COVID-19 concerns. Despite having undergone significant offseason surgery, Tkachuk confirmed he will participate in the upcoming Olympics, where NHL athletes will finally return to compete after a 12-year hiatus since 2014.
Tkachuk Reflects on the Long Olympic Gap and Team USA’s Anticipation
The NHL last had players compete in the Olympics during the 2014 games, and the extended gap has left many players eager for the return. Tkachuk recalled watching memorable moments from past tournaments, stating,
“Even if we were going every four years it would be a long time in between, but 12 years since? It seems like yesterday I was watching T.J. Oshie in the shootout, and Canada beating Sweden. I remember watching that game in the finals.”
But it seems like forever ago. There’s a lot of players who have missed out on this for a lot of years that are just so excited and gearing up for this.
Leadership Roles Designated for Team USA at Milan Games
Tkachuk was among the first six players selected for Team USA in June and was officially confirmed as part of the leadership group ahead of the Olympic opening game. Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs will serve as Team USA’s captain, while Boston Bruins’ Charlie McAvoy and Tkachuk are named alternate captains.
Auston, Charlie and Matthew did a great job in leading our team a year ago at the 4 Nations Face-Off and it’s great to have them back in those roles for the Olympics,
said Bill Guerin, general manager of Team USA’s 2026 men’s ice hockey squad and the Minnesota Wild.

They all bring different leadership traits to the table and I know all three are excited, as is our whole team, about representing our country as part of Team USA.
The Tkachuk Brothers Unite to Represent the U.S.
Brady Tkachuk, Matthew’s younger brother and captain of the Ottawa Senators, is also part of Team USA’s roster. The siblings will room together during the Milan Games, sharing the unique experience of competing side by side on the international stage. Matthew expressed their excitement, saying,
“We’re just so jacked up, whether or not we play [on the same line] with each other, we’re just so excited to be on the same team.”
It’s really an exciting time to be an American hockey player, just to be able to go represent our country again and hopefully do what our country hasn’t done in 40 plus years.
Tkachuk’s Injury and Past International Tournaments
Matthew sustained a sports hernia and torn adductor injury at last year’s NHL 4 Nations Face-Off, an international tournament where the brothers also represented Team USA. Despite this setback requiring surgery, Tkachuk remains determined to participate in the Olympics and contribute to his country’s success.
Team USA’s Upcoming Olympic Schedule and Broadcast Details
Team USA begins play at the Milan Olympics on Thursday against Latvia, with the game scheduled for 3:10 p.m. Eastern Time and broadcast on USA Network. All tournament hockey games will be available for live streaming on Peacock in the United States. This Olympic return promises intense competition and heightened attention as NHL players showcase their talents on a global stage once again.
Other Key Player Involvements and Olympic Hockey Setup
Aside from Matthew and Brady Tkachuk, the United States roster includes Seth Jones (currently injured), with Bill Zito as assistant GM and Teddy Richards serving as equipment manager. Across other nations, notable players such as Sam Reinhart and Brad Marchand represent Canada, while Finland‘s contingent includes Eetu Luostarinen and Niko Mikkola, among others.
The Olympic ice hockey schedule is packed with group stage matches across different time zones, featuring teams from Slovakia, Finland, Sweden, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, France, Czechia, Canada, Latvia, and the United States. Games will be broadcast across multiple networks including USA Network, CBC Gem, SN, TSN, CNBC, and NBC, ensuring broad accessibility to viewers.
Significance of NHL Players’ Return and Team USA’s Prospects
The presence of NHL players like Matthew Tkachuk signals a revitalization for Olympic ice hockey, restoring the tournament’s competitive prestige after years of absence. Team USA’s mix of experienced leaders and talented athletes has generated widespread anticipation for their performance in Milan. Success here could end the nation’s decades-long drought in Olympic hockey gold, making these Games a pivotal chapter for American hockey.
