BOSTON — On Thursday night, Charlie Coyle will make his first return to TD Garden since being traded, facing the Boston Bruins in his new Columbus Blue Jackets uniform. Coyle, a native of East Weymouth and former Boston University player, reflected on what playing for his hometown team meant to him and how the upcoming game holds playoff implications despite the nostalgia.
Reflecting on Time with the Bruins
Charlie Coyle spent parts of seven seasons with the Bruins after joining Boston University, becoming a favorite both on the ice and within the local community. The trade deadline last year saw him move from Boston to Colorado, before a summer deal sent him to Columbus. Returning to the arena where he grew up cheering the Bruins invokes a deep sense of gratitude and reflection for Coyle.
Coming to the rink brings back a lot of good memories of playing here and playing for the team and, being around family and friends,
he said following Columbus’ morning skate.
Just playing for the Boston Bruins, pretty fortunate and lucky to play here and play for so many great teams and learn from a lot of different players and coaches and just everything that comes with it here. I’m just very lucky, fortunate to have been here for so long and play in front of my family and friends and play for an Original 6 team.

Anticipation of a Warm Tribute
In recognition of his contributions to Boston hockey, Coyle is set to receive a tribute video on the Garden’s videoboard during the first TV timeout of the opening period. This special moment will come as both teams mark their return from the NHL Olympic break, adding emotion to what will already be a significant evening for Coyle and Bruins fans.
Playoff Stakes Overshadow Nostalgia
While the trip down memory lane is meaningful, Coyle understands that Thursday’s matchup carries weight beyond sentiment. The Bruins currently hold the last wild card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with the Blue Jackets trailing closely behind. He emphasized the intense focus required to compete and help his current team advance.
You got to switch gears too because it’s a really, really big game for us and they’re right ahead of us in the standings,
Coyle explained.
Enduring Gratitude for Boston Experience
Looking back at his tenure in Boston, Coyle expressed profound appreciation for the opportunity to represent the Bruins for an extended period.
The more you get away from it as time passes and you think more about it, I just feel very, very fortunate because not a lot of people get to do that for as long as I got to, so I feel very, very lucky,
he shared.
Nothing but grateful and just feeling very fortunate to be right here and what they did for me to trade for me and bring me in and keep me there as long as they did was just an awesome thing. I know I’ll look back on it as time goes throughout my life and think of all the good times that and all the memories that I can bring with me.
As Charlie Coyle faces off against his former team, the evening promises a blend of heartfelt reflection and high-stakes competition that could influence the playoff picture for both clubs. The memory of his years with the Bruins will remain a cherished chapter as he channels determination to help the Blue Jackets move forward in the season.
