Oilers Eye Oliver Ekman-Larsson in Shocking Trade Push

As the NHL trade deadline nears in March 2026, the Edmonton Oilers are actively exploring options to strengthen their defensive lineup. After securing goaltender Tristan Jarry from the Pittsburgh Penguins in December 2025, the Oilers have faced challenges in maintaining consistent defensive support, prompting a search for reliable defensemen to improve overall performance.

Oilers Focus on Justin Faulk and Oliver Ekman-Larsson

According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, Edmonton has highlighted St. Louis Blues defenseman Justin Faulk and Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson as prime candidates to bolster their defense. Appearing on Sports on Prime Canada, Seravalli noted,

“I believe the Edmonton Oilers have circled and are paying very close attention to St Louis Blues defenseman Justin Faulk and Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson.”

He further explained that the Oilers initially sought a large, scoring-capable defender, but with Paul Coffey’s return and efforts to help Jarry find his rhythm, their priorities now include tightening defensive play. Seravalli added,

“They were originally looking for a scoring winner with size. Now, as they bring Paul Coffey back, they’re trying to get Tristan Jarry adjusted and playing better hockey. They know that they need to defend better. And I think of the impact that Matthias Ekholm had in 2023 with his acquisition. Those are some names that stand out that could have a very similar impact on Edmonton’s back end.”

Justin Faulk is in the middle of a seven-year contract worth $45.5 million and will reach unrestricted free agency in 2027. This season, the 33-year-old has contributed 32 points with 11 goals and 21 assists over 58 games.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson’s Preference to Remain in Toronto

Oliver Ekman-Larsson is in the second year of his four-year, $14 million contract, which includes a no-trade clause that limits potential trade destinations to 16 teams. Despite trade rumors, there is a strong inclination within the Maple Leafs organization to retain him, as the defenseman himself expresses a clear desire to continue with Toronto.

“He doesn’t want to go anywhere” and wants to stay with the Maple Leafs well beyond the trade deadline. He loves Toronto. He wants to stay in Toronto. He wants to win in Toronto,” via Nick Alberga.

The 34-year-old has been productive this season, registering 35 points through eight goals and 27 assists in 59 games, underscoring his value to Toronto’s defensive core.

Implications for Edmonton’s Defense and Upcoming Moves

If Edmonton succeeds in acquiring either Faulk or Ekman-Larsson, it could significantly enhance the Oilers’ defensive stability and overall team balance, addressing the gaps that have hampered their recent performances. The moves would aim to complement Jarry’s goaltending and align with the broader strategy of strengthening defense to support the team’s playoff ambitions. Staying attuned to these developments will be crucial as the trade deadline approaches.
