Ryan Poehling Signs 4-Year Extension with Anaheim Ducks

On Thursday in Anaheim, as the NHL trade deadline approached, the Anaheim Ducks solidified their roster by agreeing to a four-year contract extension with center Ryan Poehling. The new deal, reflecting Poehling’s growing value to the team, underscores the Ducks’ commitment to strengthening their depth down the middle through the 2030 season.

Poehling’s contract extension comes with an average annual value of $3.75 million, a notable increase from his previous earnings. His blend of defensive responsibility and playmaking ability has noticeably improved the Ducks’ bottom-six forward group, making him a key asset moving forward.

Poehling’s Journey and Role in Anaheim’s Lineup

Before joining Anaheim, Poehling was on the second year of a two-year contract with the Philadelphia Flyers, set to become a free agent this summer. His NHL journey has included stints with Montreal and Pittsburgh, before being acquired by the Ducks last June as part of the trade that sent Trevor Zegras to Philadelphia.

Speaking from Newport Harbor via a video call, Poehling expressed his appreciation for the team and organization.

“For me, the biggest thing was term,”

he said in an interview with Alexis Downie of Ducks Stream.

“I’ve been everywhere. I’ve been to a lot of different places. For myself, I just wanted some sense of stability. I really enjoyed the area, and I think that everyone in the Anaheim organization has treated me so well. I enjoy that part, and I just enjoy where the team is headed.”

He went on to highlight the team’s young core:

“The amount of young talent (we have), It’s so much fun to watch, and also be a part of a be around,”

Poehling added.

“I thought it was a perfect fit for me.”

Penalty Killing Leader and Offensive Contributions

Poehling has become a vital player on Anaheim’s penalty kill, leading all forwards in penalty-killing minutes per game and ranking second overall among forwards, just behind Alex Killorn despite playing fewer games. Thanks in part to efforts from Poehling and teammates, the Ducks’ penalty kill success rate has climbed to 77.3%, moving up from 29th to 23rd in the NHL this season.

Offensively, Poehling stands 10th in team scoring with seven goals and 17 assists, with a majority of those assists being primary helpers. His recent form has been impressive; he has recorded two goals in five games since the Olympic break, including a standout goal against the Winnipeg Jets where he beat U.S. Olympic gold medal goaltender Connor Hellebuyck shortly after a penalty kill.

Highlighting that moment, Zach Cavanagh tweeted:

“Ducks take the lead for the first time tonight. After killing a Jets power play, Ryan Poehling takes on the entire Winnipeg line-up and flutters this one over Hellebuyck’s glove. 4-3 Anaheim. Late 3rd. #FlyTogether.”

Roster Uncertainties Loom as Free Agency Approaches

While securing Poehling with a multi-year contract brings some stability, the Ducks still face a tense offseason ahead. Six unrestricted free agents remain on the roster, including captain Radko Gudas, defenseman Jacob Trouba, and backup goalie Petr Mrazek, along with forwards Ross Johnston, Jeffrey Viel, and Jansen Harkins.

More pressing, however, are five key restricted free agents expected to require contract negotiations this summer: Leo Carlsson, Cutter Gauthier, Pavel Mintyukov, Olen Zellweger, and Ian Moore. These pending decisions contribute to an atmosphere of uncertainty, making Poehling’s extension a significant step toward maintaining core continuity amid upcoming roster challenges.
