Tanielu “Daniel” Ekuale (born January 13, 1994) is an American Samoan professional American football nose tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Washington State Cougars. Ekuale has established himself in the NFL since starting his career in 2018, showcasing his skills on various teams before joining the Steelers in 2025.
Early Life and Background
Daniel Ekuale was born in Pago Pago, American Samoa. He attended Nuʻuuli Voc-Tech High School, where he began to develop his skills in football. Ekuale was recognized as the best college prospect for his class in American Samoa, attracting attention from several universities. He ultimately committed to play college football at Washington State University, turning down offers from other schools including Oregon and Hawaii.
Path to American Football
At Washington State University, Daniel Ekuale was a member of the Washington State Cougars for five seasons, redshirting his true freshman year. He became a starter at nose tackle during his redshirt junior season, recording a career-high 23 tackles and a sack. In his redshirt senior season, he made 17 tackles and one sack while starting 12 of the Cougars’ 13 games. Ekuale finished his collegiate career with impressive statistics, appearing in 51 games and accumulating 71 total tackles, three sacks, and two forced fumbles.

Daniel Ekuale signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent on May 4, 2018. Although he was waived at the end of training camp, he re-signed to the Browns’ practice squad shortly after. He finished his first season with four tackles in seven games played, but was placed on injured reserve due to a calf injury.
