James Bouknight was born on September 18, 2000, in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in Crown Heights, he initially played baseball during his childhood but transitioned to basketball in middle school. Bouknight began his high school basketball career at La Salle Academy in Manhattan, where he quickly made a name for himself by averaging 17.4 points per game as a junior. His performance led his team to the New York Federation Class B state championship, and he was recognized as the tournament’s most valuable player. Following this success, Bouknight transferred to the MacDuffie School in Granby, Massachusetts, to gain more exposure and further develop his skills.

His first points came later that season, on November 26, 2021, during a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he scored two free throws.
