Nazem Kadri is a Canadian professional ice hockey centre who serves as an alternate captain for the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League (NHL). Early Life and Background
Nazem Kadri was born in London, Ontario, the second of five children and the only son of Samir and Suhayla Kadri. His grandparents were born in Kfar Danis, a mixed Muslim–Christian village in Lebanon, and later moved to Ontario when his father Samir was four years old. Samir had dreamed of playing hockey as a young man, but his family could not afford the costs. When Nazem was born, his father decided his son would have the chance to play the sport, and that decision shaped the course of the family’s life.
Kadri began skating at the age of two and joined his first hockey team at four. By age six, he was already playing at the elite level. The Kadri family frequently attended NHL games and, despite living in Southwestern Ontario, supported the Montreal Canadiens. Path to Hockey
By the end of high school, Kadri was widely projected to be selected in the NHL Draft. He entered the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) after the Kitchener Rangers chose him in the first round, 18th overall, of the 2006 OHL Priority Selection. In his second OHL season, he recorded 25 goals and 40 assists for 65 points in 68 games and helped Kitchener capture the J. Ross Robertson Cup as OHL champions, reaching the 2008 Memorial Cup final before losing to the Spokane Chiefs. Kadri was selected seventh overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and signed a three-year entry-level contract on July 6, 2009.
