Trey Lyles was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, to an American father and a Canadian mother. At the age of seven, he moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where he began his journey in basketball. Lyles attended Arsenal Technical High School, where he developed his skills and gained recognition as a top player in the United States.

During his senior year at Arsenal Tech, Lyles was ranked as one of the best high school basketball players in the nation. He averaged 23.7 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game, leading his team to the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) Class 4A State Championship game.
