Early Life and Background

Zackary Dalton Bailey was born on November 8, 1995, in Summerville, South Carolina. He grew up in this town and attended Summerville High School, where he played football under coach John McKissick, who is recognized as the all-time most winningest coach at any level. During his senior year, Bailey played left guard and helped his team reach the second round of the playoffs, earning recognition as a finalist for the state “Mr. Football” award. Rivals.com ranked him as a four-star prospect, making him the second-best player in South Carolina and the fifth-best offensive guard in the nation. After graduating in 2015, he chose to enroll at the University of South Carolina to continue his football career.

Path to American Football

As a true freshman in 2015, Bailey appeared in 12 games for the South Carolina Gamecocks, starting five of them, with two at left guard and three as a center. His performance in 2016 earned him the title of the team’s most consistent and highest-performing offensive lineman, as he started every game at left guard and served as a team captain. He was awarded the Offensive Tenacity Award, sharing it with Hayden Hurst. In 2017, Bailey transitioned to right tackle and continued to make an impact, starting in nine games despite missing four due to injury. He was recognized on the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Fall Academic Honor Roll and named a third-team all-conference player by the league’s coaches. After considering entering the NFL draft, he opted to return for his senior season in 2018 to complete his degree, becoming the first member of his family to graduate.
