AM Racing Overview

AM Racing was an American professional stock car racing team based in Statesville, North Carolina. Founded in 2016 by Tim Self, the team competed primarily in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, and ARCA Menards Series. Known for fielding multiple car numbers including the 15, 22, 25, and 76, AM Racing went through various manufacturer partnerships over its operational years, running Toyotas from 2016 to 2017, Chevrolets from 2018 to 2022, and Fords from 2023 to 2025. The organization developed several drivers throughout its decade of competition while maintaining a presence in major NASCAR touring series.

Throughout its existence, AM Racing underwent several organizational changes including mergers with Niece Motorsports in 2018 and Win-Tron Racing in 2021. The team operated from a shop in Statesville that it shared with other racing organizations at various times. Though AM Racing did not secure any championships or race victories during its operational history, it completed a total of 307 races across multiple series and earned one pole position in the Xfinity Series. On November 24, 2025, it was announced that the team would be acquired by Sigma Performance Services starting in 2026, though this acquisition was never finalized and the team formally ceased operations on May 15, 2026.

Founding and Organizational Origins

AM Racing was established in 2016 when Tim Self founded the organization to compete in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. The inaugural season saw the team field the No. 22 Toyota Tundra full-time with Austin Wayne Self driving. The Self family’s involvement in motorsports provided the foundation for the new team, with Tim Self serving as owner and Austin Wayne Self taking the wheel for the team’s competitive debut at Daytona International Speedway in February 2016.

The early operational structure centered on a modest startup effort, with the team building its infrastructure from the ground up. The No. 22 entry completed its first race at Daytona where Self qualified nineteenth and finished in that same position, one lap down. Throughout the inaugural season, the team gained experience and exposure in the Truck Series, with Self delivering a breakthrough ninth-place finish at the Aspen Dental Eldora Dirt Derby. After twelve races, the team’s operations were taken over by Win-Tron Racing, though the Self family retained an ownership stake in the organization.

Growth Into NASCAR Competition

Following the 2016 season, AM Racing expanded its competitive footprint by establishing partnerships with major manufacturers and teams. For the 2017 season, the organization announced a technical partnership with Joe Gibbs Racing for engine power, a significant development that elevated the team’s competitive capabilities. The team fielded five races under the AM Racing banner that year, including an entry for J. J. Yeley at Daytona while Self drove the No. 32 truck.

In 2018, AM Racing merged into Niece Motorsports, combining operational resources and driver development efforts. This partnership allowed the team to pool technical expertise and share equipment while maintaining the Self family’s ownership interest. However, the merger proved temporary as AM Racing split from Niece Motorsports in 2019 and returned to fielding its own entries. For the 2019 season, Self returned to the No. 22 truck full-time and achieved the team’s first top-five finish at Michigan Speedway, marking a milestone in the organization’s competitive progression.

AM Racing Competitive Journey

AM Racing competed across multiple NASCAR national and regional touring series throughout its operational history, with its primary focus on the Truck Series and later the Xfinity Series. The organization fielded entries in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series from 2016 through 2023, the NASCAR Xfinity Series from 2023 through 2025, and the ARCA Menards Series and its regional divisions from 2021 through 2025. Total competition encompassed 307 races across all series, with the organization developing drivers ranging from self-owned entries to those advancing toward the sport’s upper echelons.

Early Seasons and Development (2016–2019)

The organization’s early years were characterized by learning experiences and gradual improvement in the competitive Truck Series. After the initial 2016 season with varying results, the 2017 campaign saw enhanced performance through the Joe Gibbs Racing engine partnership. The highlight of that season came at Daytona when Austin Wayne Self piloted a second entry, the No. 32 truck, to a career-best second-place finish after avoiding a multi-car incident on the final lap. This result demonstrated the team’s potential and provided valuable experience for future competition.

The 2019 season represented a significant chapter in the team’s history. Self returned for a full-season effort and delivered the organization’s first top-five finish at Michigan Speedway. However, the season was interrupted when Self was suspended in April for violating NASCAR’s substance abuse policy. During his suspension, Bubba Wallace filled in for two races at Martinsville and Texas before Self was reinstated and returned to competition. This challenging period tested the organization’s resilience and operational continuity.

Breakthrough in Xfinity Series (2023–2025)

On October 7, 2022, AM Racing announced its intention to enter the NASCAR Xfinity Series beginning in 2023, representing a major expansion of the organization’s competitive scope. On December 12, 2022, the team confirmed that Brett Moffitt would drive the No. 25 entry full-time in the 2023 season, marking the team’s debut in the series at the Beef. It’s What’s for Dinner. 300 at Daytona.

Prior to the 2024 season, AM Racing announced plans to expand to a second Xfinity Series team. On October 5, 2023, the organization signed Hailie Deegan to a multi-year deal to drive the No. 15 beginning in 2024, with AirBox, Inc. and Viva Tequila Seltzer serving as primary sponsors. Following a string of disappointing results, the team made a notable driver change when two-time Cup Series champion Joey Logano replaced Deegan for the Chicago street race, where he finished eighth. On July 8, 2024, AM Racing and Deegan officially announced their separation, with Josh Berry and Lawless Alan later filling the seat on a temporary basis.

On September 20, 2024, Harrison Burton was announced as the driver of the No. 25 car for the 2025 season. Additionally, the organization fielded the No. 76 car part-time for Kole Raz in both 2024 and 2025 seasons. On October 8, 2025, Burton announced he would not return to AM Racing for 2026, and shortly after, Nick Sanchez was named to drive the No. 25 entry for the 2026 season.

Modern Program and Final Operations (2020–2026)

In 2020, AM Racing moved its operations to the former Front Row Motorsports race shop in Statesville, North Carolina. This facility became the team’s home base and was shared at various times with Jordan Anderson Racing and Win-Tron Racing, although these organizations remained separate entities. On January 14, 2021, it was announced that AM Racing and Win-Tron Racing would merge operations for the 2021 season, combining their resources and technical capabilities under one banner.

Following the Win-Tron merger, the organization expanded into the ARCA Menards Series, fielding the No. 32 car for Howie DiSavino III and later Christian Rose on a full-time basis. The ARCA program allowed the team to develop drivers and maintain competitive entries across multiple touring series simultaneously. In 2023, the team announced intentions to return to ARCA competition full-time with Christian Rose driving.

The final chapter of AM Racing’s existence began on November 24, 2025, when it was announced that Sigma Performance Services would acquire the team starting in 2026. The organization planned to continue fielding entries in the Xfinity Series and ARCA under the SPS Racing banner. However, on January 30, 2026, it was announced that the acquisition was never finalized. On May 15, 2026, AM Racing formally ceased operations, bringing an end to a decade of competition in American stock car racing.

Philosophy and Competitive Strengths

AM Racing operated with a focus on driver development and providing opportunities for emerging talent in NASCAR’s national and regional series. The organization’s strategy centered on forming technical alliances with larger teams and manufacturers to access competitive equipment and engineering resources. Throughout its existence, AM Racing prioritized continuity in its driver lineup while remaining flexible enough to make changes when performance warranted adjustments.

Key Milestones and Major Moments

Several moments defined AM Racing’s competitive history. The 2017 Daytona runner-up finish with Austin Wayne Self in the No. 32 truck represented the team’s best overall result. The 2019 top-five at Michigan Speedway marked the organization’s first major Truck Series breakthrough. In the Xfinity Series, AM Racing’s single pole position demonstrated the team’s ability to qualify at the front of the field. The partnership with Joe Gibbs Racing in 2017 elevated the team’s technical standing, while the mergers with Niece Motorsports and Win-Tron Racing represented significant organizational milestones that shaped the team’s trajectory through its final years.

AM Racing Achievements and Results

AM Racing completed 307 races across five different series during its operational history from 2016 to 2026. Despite consistent participation and multiple seasons of competition, the organization did not record any race victories in any of the series in which it competed. The team did earn one pole position in the Xfinity Series, highlighting the challenges of translating qualifying speed into race-day success across the competitive landscape of NASCAR’s touring divisions.

Xfinity Series Achievements

AM Racing entered the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2023 with Brett Moffitt driving the No. 25 entry. The organization competed in the series through the 2025 season, completing 106 races during this period. In addition to the full-time No. 25 program, the team fielded a second Xfinity entry on a part-time basis with drivers including Hailie Deegan, Joey Logano, Josh Berry, Lawless Alan, and Harrison Burton. The organization earned one pole position in Xfinity Series competition. Notable results included Joey Logano’s eighth-place finish at the Chicago street race in 2024 while substituting for Deegan.

Truck Series Achievements

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series served as AM Racing’s primary competitive venue for most of its existence. The organization competed in 136 Truck Series races from 2016 through 2023. The standout result came in 2017 when Austin Wayne Self finished second at Daytona in the No. 32 truck. The 2019 season saw Self deliver the team’s first top-five finish at Michigan Speedway. Additional highlights included top-ten finishes at Texas Motor Speedway and Martinsville Speedway in 2020, where Self finished sixteenth in points that season.

ARCA Menards Series Achievements

AM Racing’s ARCA program began following the merger with Win-Tron Racing in 2021. The organization fielded entries in the main ARCA Menards Series, as well as the East and West regional divisions. Combined, the team completed 65 races across all ARCA series. The No. 32 entry driven by Howie DiSavino III and later Christian Rose represented the organization’s primary ARCA effort. The team maintained a part-time presence in the East and West divisions while pursuing full-time competition in the main series.
