Dario Franchitti Joins NASCAR Comeback, Credits Jimmie Johnson

Dario Franchitti announced his return to NASCAR on February 28, competing in the Truck Series race on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida. The four-time IndyCar Series champion will drive the No. 1 TRICON Garage entry, marking his first NASCAR start since 2007. This comeback opportunity originated from a conversation with longtime friend and seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson.

Reflecting on how this chance came about, Franchitti said,

“I got the opportunity from literally a conversation with Jimmie. I said I thought it would be fun, I thought it’d be interesting to push myself again, to test myself, to do the whole process of trying to be competitive again. Since I stopped, I still do a lot in historic stuff; I’ve gotten to drive some really cool cars against some pretty good drivers. I guess this is more of the same. It’s just a modern truck.”

St. Petersburg’s Special Significance for Franchitti

This one-off Truck Series appearance aligns with the crossover weekend between NASCAR and IndyCar at St. Petersburg’s downtown street circuit, a track closely associated with Franchitti’s past successes. He enjoyed a dominant IndyCar win here in 2011, leading 94 of 100 laps en route to the victory. The track is also the IndyCar season opener, and Franchitti remains involved through his advisory role with Chip Ganassi Racing.

Franchitti explained the appeal of racing at St. Petersburg again, saying,

“When this came up with the NASCAR Truck race on the Saturday, I thought, ‘Well, I’m not going to get to drive an Indy car there; I’m too bloody old for one thing, but I love the track, I love St. Pete.”

He recalled the casual nature of how plans developed:

“Jimmie and I have spent a lot of time together over the last couple years at the track, racing together, racing against each other occasionally, and just having fun away from the track. We were basically drinking a glass of wine, and I said to him, ‘God, that would be fun to do that at St. Pete.’ And the next morning, he calls me and goes, ‘Hey, found your truck!’ Jimmie’s been the driving force behind it,”

Dario Franchitti added.

Details of Franchitti’s Truck Series Entry and Preparation

Franchitti will pilot the TRICON Garage No. 1 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, with sponsorship from Dollar Tree. He is scheduled for testing at Sebring International Raceway ahead of the upcoming 80-lap race. The No. 1 truck has been used as a shared entry, with six drivers splitting the season’s 25 Truck races in 2025, including Brent Crews and Brandon Jones handling 16 starts combined.

The 46-year-old’s prior NASCAR experience includes a single Truck Series start at Martinsville Speedway on October 20, 2007, finishing 33rd in the No. 41 Dodge owned by Kerry Scherer. He also made 18 starts in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series in 2007 and 2008 with Chip Ganassi Racing, competing in Nos. 42 and 40 Dodges and achieving a notable fifth-place finish at Watkins Glen. During this period, Franchitti also participated part-time in the NASCAR Cup Series with 10 starts in 2008 for Ganassi before fully returning to IndyCar.

Jimmie Johnson Shares Perspective on Franchitti’s Return

Jimmie Johnson, preparing for a demanding 2026 where he will compete in both the NASCAR Cup and Truck Series, expressed enthusiasm about supporting Franchitti’s comeback. Johnson will drive TRICON’s No. 1 truck, sponsored by Carvana, during NASCAR’s first weekend event at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego later this year.

Johnson acknowledged the significance of Franchitti’s return, stating,

“Dario and I had been talking for a long time about the chance to race together, so when he approached me about St. Petersburg, I knew I had to get to work,”

Johnson said in a team statement.

“I called him back a day later with an incredible opportunity to join a championship-winning team with Toyota and the great people at TRICON. It’s been a lot of fun getting him integrated into the team and spending more time together, going through the process of getting him back to racing.”

TRICON Garage’s Planned Lineup and Future Prospects

For the 2026 season, TRICON Garage has confirmed three full-time entries: Giovanni Ruggiero will return in the No. 17 truck, Tanner Gray will drive the No. 15, and Kaden Honeycutt will take over the No. 11, which was previously driven by 2023 Truck Series champion Corey Heim. The Nos. 7 and 1 trucks are expected to continue as part-time entries with rotating drivers. The team is still finalizing its fifth full-time truck for the coming season.

Significance of Franchitti’s Comeback in NASCAR

Dario Franchitti’s reentry into NASCAR after a 17-year hiatus brings renewed attention to the crossover of talents between IndyCar and NASCAR. His connection with Jimmie Johnson, a motorsport legend with his own upcoming racing commitments, has been instrumental in orchestrating this return. Franchitti’s presence at St. Petersburg not only adds star power to the Truck Series event but also highlights the growing appeal of joint race weekends that blend different motorsport disciplines.

This return may inspire other drivers with diverse racing backgrounds to revisit NASCAR competition, broadening the talent pool and fan interest. With testing and preparation underway, attention will focus on Franchitti’s performance in the upcoming race and whether further NASCAR appearances or broader commitments might follow.
