Tyler Reddick’s Stunning Double Overtime Win Seals Back-to-Back

Tyler Reddick secured a remarkable double overtime victory Sunday evening at the AutoTrader 400 held at EchoPark Speedway, following his Daytona 500 win just a week earlier. This achievement marked the first time in almost twenty years that a driver has captured victories in the opening two races of the NASCAR Cup Series season, showcasing the resilience and skill that defined Reddick’s performance.

Strong Finish Despite Car Damage and Late-race Incident

Despite suffering damage to the right front fender of his No. 45 23XI Racing Toyota during an earlier crash, Reddick demonstrated agility and determination throughout the race. He skillfully maneuvered through the field, making a decisive move on the final lap to finish just 0.164 seconds ahead of Toyota teammate Chase Briscoe of Joe Gibbs Racing. Briscoe’s critical push helped Reddick surge past fellow 23XI driver Bubba Wallace and the Chevrolets driven by Carson Hocevar and Ross Chastain.

Reddick led the most laps of the race, guiding his Toyota Camry for 53 of the 271 laps. Following his win, he exited the heavily damaged car to retrieve the checkered flag, visibly stunned by the destruction to his vehicle and the fact he still managed to claim victory after being caught in a nine-car accident with only 40 laps remaining.

A Historic Accomplishment in NASCAR

By winning the first two races of the year, Tyler Reddick became only the sixth driver in NASCAR history to achieve this feat. The last driver to do so was NASCAR Hall of Famer Matt Kenseth in 2009, highlighting the rarity and significance of Reddick’s early-season success.

Reactions from Reddick and His Team

“That’s crazy, how about that EchoPark Speedway?’’ Reddick exclaimed to an enthusiastic crowd.

“This place over the years it just puts on some amazing racing. Handling matters here, but I don’t know, I guess determination outweighs handling.”

NBA legend Michael Jordan, co-owner of 23XI Racing, expressed his pride in the team’s performance.

“Tyler did an unbelievable job, both teams did an unbelievable job,”

Jordan said, also acknowledging Bubba Wallace’s efforts. “I wanted one of them to win, I feel bad for Bubba because he had an unbelievable day, but Tyler drove his ass off. I’m very happy for Tyler and very happy for 23XI.

“The guys worked hard all summer and they never gave up. This is the fruit of their labor and for us to come out and win the first two races says a lot about our team.”

Challenges Faced by Reddick’s Crew During the Race

Tyler Reddick’s crew chief, Billy Scott, provided insight into the difficulties faced while repairing the car after the accident. With temperatures chilling at 39 degrees by race end, fixing the right front damage was a challenge, leading the team to rely heavily on tape to patch up the vehicle.

Denny Hamlin, driver and co-owner from Joe Gibbs Racing, described Reddick’s car as “carnage city,” underscoring the extent of the damage the team coped with while maintaining competitive speed.

Close Competition and Notable Finishes in the AutoTrader 400

The top five was rounded out by a strong showing from Chevrolet drivers Ross Chastain of Trackhouse Racing and teammates Carson Hocevar and Daniel Suarez from Spire Motorsports. Notably, Shane Van Gisbergen, also from Trackhouse Racing and a former Australian Supercars Series champion, achieved his best oval finish in the NASCAR Cup Series, securing sixth place despite being involved in multiple yellow flag incidents.

Other drivers finishing in the top 10 included Front Row MotorsportsZane Smith, Bubba Wallace, Ryan Preece of Roush-Fenway-Keselowski, and Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney. The race was exceptionally tight, with the leading twelve cars finishing within a second of Reddick, and nine of the fourteen leaders logging double-digit laps at the front.

Intense Final Laps Highlight the Importance of Drafting

In the closing moments, drafting played a crucial strategic role. Carson Hocevar attempted to find draft partners late in the race but ended up making a bold solo charge, overtaking three cars in one move on the final regulated lap to get near the front. However, contact with 2025 race winner Christopher Bell on the first overtime restart triggered the final caution flag.

This led to Hocevar lining up beside Bubba Wallace on the front row at the final restart. Wallace initially took the lead but moved high on the track, enabling Tyler Reddick to capitalize from below and surge past both drivers for the win.

Championship Standings and Looking Ahead

With his victory in Atlanta, Reddick now holds a 40-point lead over Bubba Wallace at the top of the championship standings, reinforcing his strong start to the season alongside his competitive teammates.

“It’s really fun to be a part of 23XI right now,”

Michael Jordan remarked with a broad smile.

The NASCAR Cup Series will shift gears to its first road course event next week with the DuraMax Grand Prix Powered by RelaDyne taking place at the renowned Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. Christopher Bell returns as the defending winner, and fans can expect intense racing action at this Formula 1 facility known for its challenging layout and high stakes.
