Early Life and Background
Bowen Byram was born on June 13, 2001, in Cranbrook, British Columbia, Canada, to Stacey and Shawn Byram. His father, Shawn Byram, was a professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) and spent 11 seasons in minor and European leagues. Shawn served as Bowen’s coach until he turned 12, when Bowen began playing full-time minor ice hockey in Alberta. Byram’s early exposure to the sport, combined with his father’s guidance, laid the foundation for his future success in hockey. Byram joined the Lethbridge Golden Hawks of the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League (AMBHL) at the age of 12, where he quickly made a name for himself. During the 2015–16 AMBHL season, he emerged as the top-scoring defenceman in the league, recording 22 goals and 37 assists in 34 games. His performance helped the Golden Hawks win the AMBHL championships and finish third at the Western Canadian Bantam AAA Championship.
Path to Hockey
Following his success in the AMBHL, Bowen Byram was selected third overall by the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft. He signed with the team shortly after. Although he was only eligible to play a limited number of games during the 2016–17 season, Byram made a significant impact, recording 29 points in 20 regular season games with the Yale Hockey Academy. In his first full season with the Giants in 2017–18, Byram scored his first WHL goal on October 21, 2017, and quickly established himself as a top prospect for the NHL. His impressive performance earned him the WHL Western Conference Rookie of the Year award. Byram continued to excel in the WHL, setting records for goals by a defenceman and leading the league in postseason scoring. Early Career (2021–2022)
Bowen Byram made his NHL debut on January 21, 2021, after a delay due to COVID-19 protocols. He played 11 minutes in his first game against the Los Angeles Kings. Byram recorded his first NHL point the following day with an assist in a win over the Anaheim Ducks. However, his rookie season was marred by injuries, including concussions that sidelined him for significant periods. Despite these challenges, Byram contributed to the Colorado Avalanche’s success in the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs, helping the team secure the championship.
Breakthrough (2022–2023)
Byram’s breakout performance during the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs showcased his potential as a top defenceman.
