Courtland Jaleel Sutton (born October 10, 1995) is an American professional football wide receiver for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Southern Methodist University Mustangs and was selected by the Broncos in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Known for his impressive height and athleticism, Sutton has established himself as a key player for the Broncos since entering the league.

Early Life and Background

Courtland Sutton was born in Brenham, Texas, where he attended Brenham High School. During his high school career, Sutton played football and was recognized for his talent, earning first-team All-District honors as a tight end and second-team as a safety. His high school team finished the 2013 season with a strong 14–2 record, reaching the UIL 4A Division 2 state championship game. Sutton was regarded as a three-star prospect by ESPN and chose to commit to Southern Methodist University over offers from other schools such as Brigham Young University, the University of Colorado, and Rice University.

Path to American Football

At Southern Methodist University, Courtland Sutton began his college football career in 2014, playing in two games before suffering an injury that resulted in a medical redshirt. He returned as a redshirt freshman in 2015, starting all 12 games and recording 49 receptions for 862 yards and nine touchdowns. Sutton’s performance continued to improve, and as a sophomore in 2016, he started all 12 games again, achieving 76 receptions for 1,246 yards and ten touchdowns. After considering entering the 2017 NFL Draft, Sutton ultimately decided to return for his junior year, but he declared for the draft after completing his college career.

Sutton finished his rookie year with 42 receptions, 704 receiving yards, and four touchdowns. His performance earned him recognition and set the stage for a breakout second season.
