Jabrill Ahmad Peppers (born October 4, 1995) is an American professional football safety for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL). He was a two-time college football All-American for the Michigan Wolverines, earning unanimous All-American honors in 2016, as well as being named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Linebacker of the Year, and Return Specialist of the Year. Peppers was selected in the first round by the Cleveland Browns in the 2017 NFL Draft. He has also played for the New York Giants and the New England Patriots.
Early Life and Background
Jabrill Peppers was born in East Orange, New Jersey. He attended Don Bosco Preparatory High School in Ramsey, New Jersey, where he played youth football for the Montclair Bulldogs, a Pop Warner youth team. Peppers started as a cornerback in his freshman year and later took over as a running back in his sophomore year. During his time at Don Bosco, he helped the team win consecutive New Jersey state championships in 2010 and 2011. In 2012, he transferred to Paramus Catholic High School in Paramus, New Jersey, where he continued to excel in football, leading the team to another state championship. Peppers was recognized as Player of the Year by MSG Varsity after his junior season and participated in the 2013–14 Under Armour All-America Game. In addition to football, Peppers was a talented track athlete, setting the New Jersey Non-Public Class A outdoor 100-meter dash record. He also won both the 100 and 200-meter dashes at New Jersey’s 2013 Meet of Champions.
Path to American Football
Peppers was identified as a five-star recruit in the Class of 2014 by the Rivals.com recruiting network. He announced his verbal commitment to the Michigan Wolverines in a live telecast on ESPN on May 26, 2013. At Michigan, Peppers made an immediate impact, appearing in three games as a true freshman before redshirting due to an injury. Under head coach Jim Harbaugh, he had a standout sophomore season, earning several accolades, including Big Ten Thompson-Randle El Freshman of the Year and Second-team All-American honors. His junior year was even more impressive, as he was named a Unanimous All-American and received multiple awards for his versatility and performance on the field. Early Career (2017-2018)
Jabrill Peppers was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the first round (25th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft. He signed a fully guaranteed four-year contract worth $10.70 million, including a $5.60 million signing bonus. Peppers made his professional debut in the Browns’ home opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers, recording four solo tackles and a pass deflection. He finished his rookie season with 57 combined tackles and one interception in 13 games. In 2018, he continued to develop as a player, recording 79 combined tackles and one interception.
Breakthrough (2019-2021)
On March 13, 2019, Peppers was traded to the New York Giants as part of a deal that sent Odell Beckham Jr. to the Browns. He quickly established himself as the starting strong safety for the Giants. In his first season with the team, he recorded 76 combined tackles and one interception. Peppers faced injury challenges in 2020, but he still managed to contribute significantly, finishing the season with 91 combined tackles, a career-high 2.5 sacks, and one interception. In 2021, he suffered a torn ACL, which limited his contributions to six games that season.
