Early Life and Background

Richard Lee Jemison III was raised in Birmingham, Alabama. He attended multiple high schools, starting at Ramsay High School for his freshman year. He then transferred to Homewood High School for his sophomore year, where he was part of the team that won the 2016 Alabama 6A state championship. For his senior year, Jemison moved to Hoover High School, where he averaged 19 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 blocks per game, earning all-state honorable mention. Jemison was rated as a three-star prospect and committed to play college basketball for the Clemson Tigers over offers from Harvard and Alabama.

Path to Basketball

Jemison began his college basketball career at Clemson, where he played 20 games as a freshman and 30 games during his sophomore season, although he only averaged 8.4 minutes per game. On May 6, 2020, he entered the transfer portal and committed to the UAB Blazers shortly after. The NCAA granted him immediate eligibility for the 2020–21 season. During his junior year at UAB, Jemison contributed to the team achieving the sixth-best scoring defense in the NCAA and was named to the Conference USA All-Defensive team in 2021. He led the Blazers in total rebounds and blocks during the 2021–22 season and returned for his senior year in 2022–23, averaging 9.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. His 329 rebounds set a single-season record for UAB, and he was selected to the All-Conference USA third team and All-Defensive team in 2023.

After going undrafted in the 2023 NBA Draft, Jemison joined the Phoenix Suns for the 2023 NBA Summer League. He signed with the New Orleans Pelicans on September 30, 2023, but was waived shortly after. On October 30, 2023, he joined the Birmingham Squadron, the Pelicans’ affiliate in the NBA G League.

Jemison signed a 10-day contract with the Washington Wizards on January 20, 2024, where he appeared in two games. He then signed a 10-day contract with the Memphis Grizzlies, where he registered his first NBA points with a five-point performance against the Cleveland Cavaliers on February 2.
