Xavien Flowers was born on September 11, 2000, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Willie Flowers and Jackie Walden. He was the 11th of 14 children in his family. Tragically, Flowers lost his mother at the age of five due to a head injury, and later faced the loss of his brother, Martin, who was murdered. Despite these hardships, Flowers excelled in sports during his youth, attending NSU University School in Davie, Florida. There, he played both wide receiver and cornerback, helping his team achieve back-to-back state semifinal appearances. As a junior, he recorded impressive statistics, catching 48 passes for 631 yards and 10 touchdowns. His performance earned him recognition as a three-star prospect, leading him to commit to play college football at Boston College.

At Boston College, Zay Flowers made an immediate impact as a true freshman, catching 22 passes for 341 yards and three touchdowns. His development continued as he worked out with NFL players during the COVID-19 pandemic, which helped refine his skills. By his sophomore season, Flowers became the second wide receiver in the school’s history to be named first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference, finishing with 56 receptions for 892 yards and nine touchdowns.
