Erik Gudbranson Bio
Erik Donald Stanley Gudbranson (born January 7, 1992) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman and alternate captain for the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected third overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2010 NHL entry draft. Gudbranson has previously played for the Florida Panthers, Vancouver Canucks, Pittsburgh Penguins, Anaheim Ducks, Ottawa Senators, Nashville Predators, and Calgary Flames.
Early Life and Background
Erik Gudbranson was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He grew up playing minor hockey for the Gloucester Rangers AA rep teams in the Ontario District Hockey Association (ODHA) before moving on to AAA Minor Midget with the Ottawa Jr. 67’s. His talent was recognized early on, leading to his selection in the first round, fourth overall, by the Kingston Frontenacs in the 2008 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Priority Selection Draft. In his rookie season with the Frontenacs during the 2008–09 season, Gudbranson recorded three goals and 22 points in 63 games, despite the team not qualifying for the playoffs.
In the following season, Gudbranson faced a setback as he missed 27 games due to mononucleosis. He returned to play 41 games, scoring two goals and 23 points. His performance in the playoffs included a goal and two assists in seven games, earning him the Bobby Smith Trophy, awarded to the OHL Scholastic Player of the Year. Gudbranson’s final season with Kingston in 2010–11 saw a significant improvement in his offensive output, where he scored 12 goals and 34 points in 44 games, helping the team reach the playoffs.
Path to Hockey
Erik Gudbranson made his NHL debut with the Florida Panthers during the 2011–12 season. He played his first game against the New York Islanders on October 8, 2011, and recorded his first NHL point on December 2, 2011, with an assist against the Los Angeles Kings. His first NHL goal came shortly after on December 11, 2011, against Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers. Throughout his rookie season, he contributed two goals and eight points in 72 games, helping the Panthers reach the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.
In the following seasons, Gudbranson continued to develop his skills, playing a total of 76 games during the 2014–15 season, where he achieved career highs in goals and points. However, the Panthers did not qualify for the playoffs that year.
