Steven Stamkos Bio
Steven Stamkos, born February 7, 1990, in Markham, Ontario, is a Canadian professional ice hockey centre and alternate captain for the Nashville Predators of the National Hockey League (NHL). A right-handed forward, he is regarded as one of the most prolific goal-scorers of his generation and is nicknamed “Stammer.” Stamkos was selected first overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning after a dominant junior career with the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).
During his 16-year tenure in Tampa Bay, Stamkos set the Lightning franchise records for most goals and most points scored, while also serving as team captain. He led the franchise to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021, and additional Stanley Cup Finals appearances in 2015 and 2022. After leaving the Lightning as a free agent in July 2024, he joined the Nashville Predators on a four-year contract and continued to climb the NHL’s all-time leaderboards.
Early Life and Background
Steven Stamkos was born on February 7, 1990, in Markham, Ontario, Canada, and grew up in the nearby community of Unionville. He is of Macedonian and Scottish descent. He attended Central Park Public School and St. Brother André Catholic High School in Markham, and later attended Northern Collegiate Institute and Vocational School in Sarnia after being drafted into the OHL.
Stamkos began organized hockey with the Markham Waxers of the Eastern AAA Hockey League within the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA). He was a teammate of P. K. Subban during a season with the North York Canadiens, and he won eight consecutive OMHA titles in minor hockey. In March 2006, he led the Waxers to the OHL Cup championship, and in 2003 he represented the Waxers at the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament.
Path to Hockey
Following a season with the minor Waxers in which he scored 197 points over 66 games, Stamkos was selected first overall in the 2006 OHL Draft by the Sarnia Sting. He immediately became one of the top junior players in North America, joining fellow future NHLers Logan Couture, John Tavares, Michael Del Zotto, Cameron Gaunce, Cody Hodgson, and P. K. Subban who he had played with in the Greater Toronto Area.
Stamkos scored 92 points in 63 games as a junior rookie in 2006–07 and won the Bobby Smith Trophy as the OHL’s scholastic player of the year. Early Career (2008–2010)
Stamkos made his NHL debut on October 4, 2008, in Prague against the New York Rangers, and he scored his first NHL goal two games later against the Buffalo Sabres. He posted 23 goals, 23 assists, and 46 points in 79 games during his rookie season, highlighted by a natural hat-trick on February 17, 2009, that made him the first rookie in Lightning history to score three goals in a single game. Despite a slow start under head coach Barry Melrose, he produced 19 points in his final 20 games.
After training extensively with retired NHL player Gary Roberts during the summer of 2009, Stamkos broke out in 2009–10. He finished 2010–11 with 45 goals and 91 points, finishing second in NHL scoring behind Corey Perry. Stamkos married his longtime girlfriend, Sandra Porzio, on June 30, 2017, in Toronto. The couple has three children, two sons and one daughter.
