Browns Miss Out on Top Free Agent Guard, but Stay Active

On the first day of NFL free agency Monday, the Cleveland Browns secured two additions to their roster, signing guard Zion Johnson from the Los Angeles Chargers and linebacker Quincy Williams, formerly of the New York Jets. Despite these moves, the Browns continue to pursue reinforcements along their offensive line to strengthen their squad.

Browns Unsuccessful in Pursuit of Guard Alijah Vera-Tucker

The Browns made an aggressive push to acquire Alijah Vera-Tucker, a guard and tackle who played for the New York Jets. According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Vera-Tucker ultimately agreed to a three-year contract worth $42 million with the New England Patriots, passing over Cleveland in the process. The New York Giants had also shown interest in Vera-Tucker.

Vera-Tucker, a former first-round pick from USC in 2021, has exhibited solid performance in the 42 games he has played during his five seasons, despite missing all of 2025. Now fully healthy, he would have been a valuable addition for the Browns, especially given their current need for quality guards.

The Browns’ desire to add a top-tier guard hints at the uncertain future of long-time left guard Joel Bitonio, who is currently a free agent. After 12 seasons in Cleveland, Bitonio might be considering retirement, though the Browns remain open to re-signing him if he chooses to continue his career.

Other Free Agent Guards Still Available for the Browns

Several guards remain in free agency who could fit the Browns’ needs. Daniel Faalele, formerly with the Baltimore Ravens, is a candidate likely familiar to head coach Todd Monken. Other prospects include Elgton Jenkins, who has experience as a guard and center with the Green Bay Packers, and Dillon Radunz from the New Orleans Saints.

With more talent still available, the Browns may look to add one or two more players in the second wave of free agency to bolster their offensive line depth.

Impact of Missing Out on a Top Guard Targets

Though Cleveland did not land their primary free agent goal in Vera-Tucker, they avoided signing center Tyler Linderbaum, which might prove advantageous long term. This selective approach could allow the Browns to better allocate resources and address multiple areas of need across the roster.

Outlook for Cleveland Browns as Free Agency Progresses

While the Browns missed signing a top guard, their continued activity in free agency reflects a commitment to improvement. With key figures like coach Todd Monken involved in identifying suitable free agents such as Daniel Faalele, the Browns remain positioned to enhance their offensive line and overall competitiveness this offseason.
